Berlin - 31st May/1st June

 Hi all

We journeyed from Gdansk to Berlin yesterday, an uneventful 6 hours on the train. Found our way easily to our apartment in the Mitte, a great spot close to the centre. We had been deprived of good sausages in Poland, for some reason not a Polish sausage to be had anywhere - so for our first evening meal in Berlin we sought out a local German pub, for Bratwurst, potato and sauerkraut.

This morning (Sunday) we watched a dismal performance by the demons, before heading out to purchase our weekly combined train/tram/bus/ferry tickets. We headed for some of the local landmarks Brandenburger Tor, the Reichstag and the Berliner Dom, just to mention a  few.


We then headed to our first museum of the visit, on the museum island, the Bode Museum with a very well presented range of renaissance through to 18th century paintings and sculptures. Only about 7 more to go on this precinct alone!


On the way back we spotted (bottom left) what we presume was a former post office - we need to investigate later.

We also had time to visit the New Synagogue museum near our street. It isn’t really new, and was almost totally destroyed in 1945, however the magnificent golden domes remain, and there is some poignant exhibits inside.

Today is our 13th Wedding anniversary, so happy day to us! We are heading out to sample more of Berlin’s cuisine to celebrate - probably not bratwurst or curry wurst (an enigma here).

Much more to see tomorrow, although the museums are closed. All our love from the travellers 🧳⛪️🏰🍷🧳 🇩🇪

 Hi all Only another month before we head off to Europe again! This trip we won’t visit Italy, much to Norm’s continued disappointment about the “we can’t go to Italy every year” rule! However, that will be balanced out with the fact that all of our trip this year will be “North of the Rhine” and as we know Dr Felicity, the Romans never made their presence felt there! So, while much appreciated in past trips - no Roman ruins this time Norm. Still, there will be plenty of Cathedrals to fill in the void. So this year we plan to start our journey in Munich, then a revisit to Vienna and Prague before our first visit to Poland. Warsaw - Day 1, 22 May 25

 Hi all Yesterday we left Krakow and took the train to Poland’s capital city, Warsaw. We had a pleasant journey and found our apartment easily. After the usual stocking up, we found a nice restaurant for dinner, Butchery and Wine, it was great and surprised us with the news it was a Michelin Star restaurant. Pretty reasonable prices nonetheless and as you can see we were surrounded by beef! Today we explored the Warsaw old town, which unfortunately was almost completely destroyed in WWII, firstly in bombings when the Nazis invaded, then in 1944 in retaliation for the unsuccessful uprising by the Polish people. This was the St John’s Cathedral at the end of the war, most of the old town looked the same. In one of the few good things to come out of the Soviet era occupation of the Country, amazingly the Cathedral, Castle and Old town were faithfully rebuilt on the original plans - remarkable. First day in Munich - 29 April 25

 Hi all After an early morning (6am) flight from Hobart we caught our Qantas/Finnair flight to Munich via Singapore and Helsinki. The somewhat grumpy check-in person at Qantas informed us we were taking a big risk booking a seperate flight from Hobart to Melbourne, so she couldn’t book our bags all the way through. She said it wasn’t worth the risk and we should book with Qantas all the way next time - Norm said, “and pay the extra $8000 compared to Finnair”, she said she would - bugger that! Anyway, we had a smooth flight, albeit long, and arrived in our apartment just off old town Munich just before lunch. Public transport is a dream here - we bought a group ticket for all 3 of us (could have had up to 5 people) for all travel around greater Munich for the 5 days we are here for about $60 each. Caught the S ban into the city from the airport in about 35 minutes. We had a quick look around the local area ,Marienplatz, just to be sure we had landed in Germany! Beautiful as expected...
