Prague day 3 - 12 May 25

 Hi all,

Today we explored the Prague Castle and grounds. It has been the centre of Royal life in Prague for over 1000 years, including a number of Holy Roman Emperors, and of course the Hapsburgs who occupied the castle for 400 years until 1918, when the deity ended.

We took the 22 tram from our front door right to the top of the hill in front of the castle gates.

Our first visit was to the very underrated St Vitivs Cathedral - another stunning gothic masterpiece that presumably was once reserved for Royalty only.

After a walk through a limited number of rooms in the huge palace, we encountered an even older church from the 10th century - St George’s. While much more modest, it is nonetheless very impressive and in great shape for a 1000 year old.

The next part of our visit was to the Golden lane - a row of medieval small houses perched on the side of the castle grounds - probably so that the Royals could be looked after in the manner they were accustomed. The homes were tiny and mostly owned by a variety of artisans.

We even found the old dungeon, with one of the former inhabitants still there.

It was a great visit to Castle we had been viewing from across the river for the past few days. We then travelled back down the hill to the main square - and found a local brewers pub for lunch. We started to wonder if we were being led astray, when we went down three floors into the cellar. However, the lunch was probably the most authentic and cheapest we have had - goulash and cabbage soup in crusty bread loaves for Holly and Norm and sausages for Felicity - yum. Not to mention the excellent beer that is brewed on site, at around $4.00 a pint!

We are thinking of having something different for dinner tonight - found a Brazilian restaurant around the corner, which is likely to have steak, maybe with some vegetables that are missing from most of the local dishes (cabbage and potatoes excepted).

We are off on a day tour to Cesky Krumlov tomorrow- to see a bit of the country and some more Heritage.

All our love from the Travellers ⛪️🏰⛪️🏰❤️🧳🍷
