Hi all,
Today we took a bus and ferry ride down the Danube valley towards the Benedictine Abbey at Melk. First stop was the village of Durnstein, where King Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned, then ransomed on his way to the Crusades.
After short break we caught the local Durstein to Melk ferry up the beautiful Danube to the Monastery. It was 2pm by this stage, so to offset the “hangries” we had a well earned lunch at the Abbey restaurant before embarking on the Abbey Tour - the lunch and local abbey Riesling was great.
The Abbey has been in constant use for over 900 years, and is currently both a working Monastery and a local school with over 650 students attending from the area. No photos inside unfortunately, however I can report that the Library, with over 100,000 books and the Chapel are magnificent. The views over the Danube and the village of Melk are stunning.
Looking back at the library entrance in this photo:
Well, another great day in Austria, we got back in town around 6pm and are resting up before we make another assault on some of the good local fare for a late dinner. More exploring around Vienna tomorrow.
All our love from the Travellers 🧳🚇🛳️🚂❤️
